Lionel pre-224e
224E STEAM ENGINE WITH LARGE 2224W ALL-METAL TENDER
Built from 1938 until 1941. Black with diecast 2224 tender. Zinc alloy diecast superstructure, earlier models stamped 224E on a metal plate under the cab window, later models stamped 224 only. E-unit reversing, headlight, box coupler, and a diecast all metal 2224W deluxe tender. Loco was first produced in 1938 in gunmetal grey livery with number board 224E, and a waffle-type 2689W sheet metal tender (also found on 238 Penn Torpedo locos and 265 Commodore Vanterbilt locos). In 1939, a highly detailed gunmetal diecast tender was introduced, and later that year, black replaced the gunmetal grey version. A "T" on the tender designates no whistle. Tenders with whistles had the suffix "W", which added $2 or $3 to the retail price. The metal tenders are difficult to find, having been replaced with plastic topped tenders in 1940 and 1941. |
