stamped steel base. Built from 1940 to 1942, and again from 1945 to 1950. Rubber-stamped "Lionel" and painted gray. The early 1945 to 1946 version has flat gray paint ("SF" printed on box), while the 1947 to 1950 version had a slightly darker gray paint with a hint of gloss (and no "SF" on the box). Some silver painted Pre-War versions carried over into 1945 and 1946. Box came with two cardboard inserts.
