LIONEL 646 HUDSON 4-6-4 LOCO & TENDER

Hudson steam 4-6-4 locomotive and 2046W tender. There exist two variations - 1954 production has all metal rear four wheel trailing truck and large rubber-stamped lettering on the engineer's cab, 1955 and later had plastic sheathed sheet metal four wheel trailing truck and heat-stamped letters. Black painted diecast body - most often with four window cab. Magnetraction, ornamental bell, wire hand rails, full compliment of driving hardware, three position E-unit, lighted headlight, and operating smoke unit. Body is a slightly modified 2-8-4 (Berkshire) body, and is powered by Lionel's basic six wheel drive mechanism, making an extremely handsome "midsized" Hudson - smaller than the full scale 773, but larger than the 665. The 646 is an extremely hard loco to find - most were numbered "2046" which are identical in all respects except for the number. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, the "6" prefix designated locos supplied in the O gauge sets (i.e. the 646). A "20" prefix designated the identical loco supplied in sets with 027 track (i.e. 2046). Tenders in these sets sometimes differed, but was usually the 2046 with with water scoop (with 1954 tenders equipped with metal trucks, and later models with either metal trucks or AAR plastic trucks).
