LIONEL 671-75 SMOKE BULB DEALER DISPLAY BOX

This special bayonet-base 12v lamp was built for the smoke unit of locomotives 671 and 2020, 1946 models only. The bulb has a small "pan" depressed in the glass just below the locomotive smokestack. This holds the special 196 smoke pellet while heat from the bulb vaporises it and creates smoke. A puffer mechanism on the locomotive provides synchronized drafts of air to move the smoke up and out of the stack. Either because 12v lamps tend to burn out too quickly or because Lionel wanted to standardize replacement smoke lamps, the 671-75 was changed to an 18v bulb and 703-10 was discontinued. To use up existing 671-75 boxes, the "12v" markings on the end flaps were overstamped "18v". Lamp boxes without the 18v overstamp are harder to find and are worth a modest premium.
