209 MERCHANTS LIMITED NEW HAVEN PASSENGER SET 1958
|
The New Haven's famous "Merchants Limited" was an afternoon express running both ways between Boston and NYC/NYC to Boston at identical timesOriginally carrying only Pullman parlor cars, coaches were added in the late 1950's, but it was still pretty fancyThe #209 New Haven Alco AA is equipped with horn and is extremely rare since it was only cataloged in this set and never offered for seperate sale or in any other setThe Newark passenger car is also quite rare, and the set carries a rarity rating of 7 on a scale of 1 to 8 per the Doyle reference guidesIndeed, the 209 AA is the scarcest of the Lionel Alcos (along with the 216 Burlington Alco, and the set itself was the best O27 set offered in 1958 and never any other yearContents include the 209 AA's, 2434 Newark Pullman, two 2432 Clifton Vista Dome passenger cars, and the 3436 Mooseheart observationOriginal 209P and 209T boxes for the powered and non-powered units are included, as are boxes for all passenger carsThe loco boxes are perfect and all passenger car boxes have all end flaps - some were scotch taped shut and we didn't touch them. We taped the other inside seams to prevent lossEverything is Like New (C8), except there are four "pencil lines" on the Mooseheart, located around the first window of the front group of three windows on the right side (pencil lines are marks that look like someone drew them with a pencil but aren't scratches with a depression). Also, some rust exists on the inside floor of the passenger cars which cannot be seen unless you remove the roofs (this is a common occurence with many if not most of this type of passenger car)Like New best describes the overall condition - we have detailed these imperfections so you can assign your own grade if you disagreeComes with 1958 Lionel catalogRuns perfectly if you dare run this precious set!
