  • A great running set with all metal cars, this set documents many facets of LIONEL HISTORY
  • It shows the results of Lionel trying improved metal processing technology during the late 1930's to make more realistic looking metal rolling stock
  • It shows what trains of the 40's and 50's would have been like if plastic had not been invented
  • The 224 loco (first produced in 1938) was the first 'popular' or 'low priced' DIE CAST steam engine ever produced (after Lionell had success with the die cast, massive (and expensive) 700E and 763 Hudson's
  • Did you know that Lionel invented die casting?
  • It is one of the last sets with all metal cars
  • Carried over from before World 2, the cars have identical pre-war counterparts (except for pre-war box couplers and numbers
  • All cars and tender too are all equipped with the historically significant "flying shoe/vector board" coupler, representing Lionel's first design of the new coupler; (quickly discontinued in favor of an all metal assembly)
  • Aside from finding a 1946 set in completely like new (C8) condition, this is a pretty unique find if only because all cars still have the original flying shoe couplers,( many if not most were replaced by service stations with the all metal versions
  • Included are "remnants" of boxes for evrything too, most missing all flaps, but the numbers are visible on all.
