  • This is perhaps one of the finest and certinally the most unusual Congressinal sets we have ever seen!
  • The loco is an extremely rare variation (adding value) with the large PRR decal (normally used on solid stripe 2360's) installed instead of the small red decal used on the front of the loco
  • The aluminum cars are ppactically perfect which is unusual since the parts for the aluminum cars were carried around in baskets in the factory, and most suffered scratches on the relatively soft aluminum fluting (steel passenger car parts had been handled that way also but the steel was hard enough to prevent scratches)
  • We hav magnified every mark we could find on the cars and loco so you know exactly what you are getting , including the 'glue marks' slopped over shen they attached the metal maroon stries (the glue marks are an essential thing to authentic originals
  • The five stripe GG1 is basically perfect as well with fully intact stripes that have not been rubbed with fingers etc., and are as good as the day the loco left the factory
  • Indeed, the stripes are about as good as we have ever seen, with NO variation in the intensity between the seperately applied rubber-stamped segments
  • IMPORTANTLY, there are two obscure rubs, whicb we have shown in a greatly magnified picture
  • We decided to maintain the grade of Like New (C8) as being the most accurate description of this beautiful set
  • This loco is as good as it gets these days, and there are few if any that are any better
  • The Pennsylvania's Congressional was among the top 3 or 4 most famous trains in the world
  • Seeing the GG1 pulling 18 silver passenger cars at 90 miles per hour along the four track Pennsy straight mainline from New Brunswick to Trenton NJ and through Princeton junction was a sight to behold, second only to watching the Lionel set with its illuminated silver cars with maroon stripes cruise around the Christmas Tree or around the layout!
  • This is the second Congressional set that Lionel cataloged, being produced in 1956 with the 2360 maroon GG1 five stripe loco, instead of the 2340 five stripe GG1 used in 1955
  • The original set box and original boxes for all cars and loco are included and are complete with all flaps
  • Also included are five sheets of original Lionel paper - one for each car and one for the loco
  • We do not have the billboards origially provided, including Log Cabin Syrup, Dupont, Zerex, and Zeron, Fram Oil filters, Snow Crop Peas, Kool Aid (5 cents makes two quarts!), and Wrigley's Spearmint Gum - but 11 straight, 8 curved and 1 UCS O gauge track sections are included as cataloged (not in photographs)
  • The 2543 box has a tear on the seam of the tuck-in portion of the end flap, and the 2544 box has a short tear in the flap itself
  • We debated whether to tape all the inside seams to prevent any loss but decided to leave that decision up to the new owner
  • It is hard to explain why this set is regarded by many as the most elegant of all Lionel sets, and you may have to have one to help figure out Lionel's magic! DNS.
