|
This caboose was produced from 1945 to 1947 and was the first caboose produced in the Post-War eraProduced with brown paint in two configurations: the first with a centered cupola and another with an offset one. The reference book value listed in Greenberg's 2020 price guide for the offset version is $590, compared to $53 for the centered version in Excellent condition (there is also a red version with a centered cupola valued at $38)Designed and produced before WWII, it represented one of two attempts by Lionel to use metal to create a more realistic looking caboose until plastic was inventedIt is one of our favorites and is extremely good looking and well proportioned, with an all-metal bodyIt is identical to Pre-War caboose # 2757 except for the Post-War couplers/trucks replacing the Pre-War trucksNote the number on the caboose is not the catalog number for either the Pre-War or Post-War versionAll the lettering and numbering on the body was rubber-stamped in white. The roof also had a diecast smokestackThe windows on the sides of the body were celluloid glazed, but the windows at the end of the body were all openThe caboose also had interior illumination and have either a coil coupler (rarer) or magnetic coupler, and usually one truck with no coupler. Usually staples end trucks. No scratches and two tiny areas of slight dullness in the paint did not prevent us from grading it Like New (C8)Note that the box has the Pre-War # 2757 on itHas the 1946 blue covered wiring which we see on a lot of 1946 1947 items.
