2115 1946 FREIGHT SET WITH FIRST 726 BERKSHIRE
|
This 1946 set includes Lionel's rare first model of the 2-8-4 Berkshire - the 726. With two changes in model number and various mechanical and cosmetic revisions, the Berkshire would remain part of Lionel's product line for the next 20 years! The 1946 version was highly detailed, with a diecast body painted black, silver rubber-stamped cab number, and a boiler front that could be opened on its own hinges to reveal a bulb-type smoke unitLike the 1946 turbines, the 726 used a horizontal motor that drove the front and rear drive axles through a spur-gear drive train, which in turn drove a worm drive shaftPerhaps most important of all was the fact that no E-unit lever protrudes through the boiler. This locomotive used a horizontial three-position E-unit, which was controlled by a plug and socket arrangement in the cab, negating the need for an unsightly E-unit lever slot in the boilerAdditional contents here are the 2426W whistle tender, 2458 Pennsylvania automobile car, 3451 operating log dump car, rare 2460 twelve wheel crane car, and a rare 2420 D.L.& W. work caboose with searchlightEverything grades Like New with the exception of the lift plate on the log dump car which has minor blemishesReproduction boxes are included for everything, however the automobile car box is original, as are the instruction sheets for the loco and log dump carAlso comes with five logs and a 160 bin as shownThe Doyle set book lists the price as $2400 (including set box)with rarity of 7 on a scale of 1 to 8 |
