        | This set runs great and has brilliant red Warbonnet Santa Fe's with all rolling stock graded Like NewAlhough the sides are perfect, the marks by the louvers and by the wire screens on the non-powered unit roof made us grade the pair as Excellent (they are marks/discolorations, not scratches)Also note the minor marks/pencil lines on the rear rectangle on the roof of the powered unit. These are a bit hard to see except in reflected lightLoco is the variation with a grey body mold (the other two molds colors are yellow and black)The 2343 is the first Santa Fe with Magnetraction and all the detail of the 2333 modelComes with set box and eight original piece boxes as shown, as well as original instruction sheets for the loco and operating box carFirst introduced in 1950 at $57.50 (which was a weeks pay for the average middle class citizen!), Lionel could not make enough to satisfy demand even though they were reaching production of the Santa Fe locos of one per minute on two shifts (with the third shift re- stocking the assembly line). This set was repeated in 1951 at an increased price of $70. The #2343 with Magnetraction was the successor to the #2333. Lionel decided to give both the Santa Fe and New York Central F3's their own stock numbers - #2343 and #2344 respectively. The porthole lenses, for these diesels were also revised by making them the flatter, celluloid- type resembling contact lenses. All rolling stock was "run-of-the-mill". The outfit box was the new 1950 style without the printed retail price (orange printed field with blue letters) - 1951 had the same style set box without the orange background field. The operating box car #3464 appears with either Santa Fe or NYC markings. The powered unit was packed in a corrugated carton with protective corrugate liner. The dummy unit however came in a Middle Classic box as did all the rolling stock, but it did have a corrugate liner. Set included a #2343P Santa Fe F3 A unit (dual motors, Magnetraction, headlights, operating front coupler), #2343T Santa Fe F3 dummy A unit (headlight, operating front coupler), #6456 maroon or black Lehigh Valley hopper, #3464 AT&SF or NYC operating box car, #6555 Sunoco single dome all-metal tank car in 1950 and a #6465 Sunoco two dome tank car in 1951 (usually found in the rarer over-stamped 6555 box), #6462 black gondola with barrels, #6457 illuminated fully equipped caboose, eight curved O gauge track sections, seven straight O gauge track sections, UCS uncoupling/operating track section, lockon, wire, instructional paperwork, and a 1950 or 1951 billboard set. A transformer was NOT included by Lionel and had to be purchased seperately.   |
