Graded Like NewThese cars are an unbelievable find - you will have to get your magnifying glass out just as we did in order to show these magnified views of the tiny marks and areas of paint roughness, including debatable factory or otherwise retouches on the Madison car. We think these are factory retouches because the paint is a perfect match. Non-factory retouches do not matchThe cars are made of heavy black Bakelite and were painted brown. The Bakelite proved with age not to hold the paint well. Flaking is common, and finding a set of cars with perfectly unblemished paint is extremely difficult - indeed, by the 21st century, getting to be nearly impossible. There is no sign of any paint flaking on this setAnother extraordinary feature of this set is having all three names (Madison, Irvington, and Manhattan) in one set - almost every set shipped had only two of one and one of another (or three of one name) because of the difficulty of co-ordinating production and getting the sets shipped without delaysThese cars are clearly a matched set from 1948, all with the heat-stamped "L" in "LIONEL LINES" positioned to the left of the first window in the center four window group and without silhouettesComes with reproduction boxes for all three cars. |
